The Wallet Begins To Empty
Plate 6A from A Rakes Progress
Etching and aquatint, 1963
49 x 61 cm
One of only two cancellation proofs aside from the edition of 50 + 10 artist's proofs
Hockney cancelled the plates by writing david hockney cancelled in each image.
The plates and one set of prints were donated to the Victoria and Albert Museum. This other set hung in the offices of the publishers, Editions Alecto, until their building was destroyed by fire in 1978. Fourteen of the sixteen images survived, a bit battered round the edges but with the images themslves in nice condition.
Their rarity and provenance make them extremely special. As near as you can get to a signed print.
